Update on Berkey Hall and the MSU Union

Dear Spartans,

Following the violence of February 13, MSU leadership decided no courses will be held in Berkey Hall or the MSU Union for the remainder of the 22-23 school year. After much consideration, Berkey Hall will also remain closed for academic classes and events for fall 2023 to allow time for inclusive conversations about next steps. Classroom locations that were tentatively assigned to Berkey Hall now have a blank location in the Class Search while the Office of the Registrar works to relocate course sections to alternate rooms.

Students, please be mindful when registering for fall 2023 that classroom locations may change for all courses before the start of the semester. Be sure to check all of your class locations as we get closer to the beginning of fall.

The MSU Union is an important resource for students and the community alike. As such, the building will re-open to the public on Monday, April 3, at 8 a.m. However, the MSU Union Food Court will remain closed at this time. This decision was made after conversations with numerous stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, and building partners.

As you decide when the time is right to revisit the MSU Union, we want to give you an idea of what to expect when we welcome you back. The lounges on the first floor will be open along with the Sparty’s mini-market store and the computer labs. There will also be therapy dogs in the building to welcome you. EAP will be present to support employees as well as CAPS to support students. If you would like to view memorials and tributes sent by alumni and others in the Spartan community, they will be displayed in the Lake Huron Room on the third floor.

The MSU Union team looks forward to welcoming those who are ready to use the space once more, knowing that for some, more time may be needed and for others, feelings might shift once on site. It is ok to step away or delay returning if it doesn’t feel right to you. As we navigate this return, please remember a number of support resources for our community are available. The MSU Union has supported nearly 100 years of Spartans and will continue to serve as the living room of our campus, a place for gathering, studying, and growing together as a community.
