Preserving a Campus Landmark

In early 2024, a collaborative effort between MSU’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities team and staff at the MSU Union led to new developments in preserving one of the building’s most iconic features: the cupola.

Nestled atop the historic union building, the cupola represents an important piece of campus history. However, over time, the view of it has become obscured by the surrounding tree overgrowth. Thanks to archived photographs and a shared dedication to preservation, the team is working to ensure the cupola remains visible and structurally sound for future generations.

“It’s a symbol people recognize, and we want to make sure it continues to stand out,” says MSU Union and Alumni Memorial Chapel Director Cathy Fitzpatrick.

A photo from MSU Archives is being used in media to showcase the cupola’s original appearance and remind the community of the union’s rich history. Fitzpatrick points out how the image clearly shows how the cupola looked before it became obscured by overgrown trees. The photo has become a valuable reference point as the team continues preservation efforts with authenticity and care.

IPF Electrician Dan Hanson has also played an important role in supporting the project. Lighting the cupola was his brainchild — an idea that not only enhanced the structure’s visibility at night but further emphasized its status as a campus landmark.

In addition to that contribution, Hanson has offered hands-on expertise during the preservation process and ensured the building’s electrical systems continue to support its long-term structural needs.

Beyond the Cupola
The collaboration between IPF and the MSU Union extends far beyond the rooftop. In a recent example of proactive maintenance, an IPF carpenter identified that several of the union’s original wooden exterior doors were in poor condition, some beyond the point of sanding and restoration.

“One of the IPF carpenters came through and let us know that the exterior wooden doors were beyond repair," says MSU Union Facilities Manager Celia Cosme-Brooks. “With wooden doors, you can sand them down periodically to get that fresh look. But he said we had about five that needed to be replaced and a few that could still be salvaged.”

This discovery happened without the union team making a specific request, showcasing IPF’s initiative in preserving the building's integrity.

“It’s stuff like that we don’t ask, and they let us know," says Cosme-Brooks. "We were able to put that very important request forward, and we’re going to get our doors replaced.”

Preserving the doors’ wooden design was a deliberate decision in keeping with the building’s original character, with the union’s centennial anniversary approaching in June.

As Fitzpatrick explains, the union team is “committed to maintaining the originality of the structure.”

A Model of Campus Collaboration
These projects are part of an ongoing and fruitful relationship between IPF and the MSU Union. Rather than waiting for issues to arise, the teams work hand in hand to proactively maintain and preserve the building’s heritage.

The thoughtfulness of everyone involved in this collaboration ensures updates and repairs reflect the union’s historical character while also enhancing safety and usability for everyone who walks through its doors. Together, the teams help ensure the MSU Union is still standing for the next 100 years.
