A Lifetime of Spartan Commitment: Recognizing Clara Kent

Clara Kent’s journey at Michigan State University began in 1972 as a line lady in Brody Square. Over the years, she has held various positions, including office duties and receptionist roles. However, her favorite role has always been "where the action is" — working directly with students. Her passion for Spartans is clear, and she takes pride in making them a priority every day.

“They keep me young,” she says.

Kent initially retired in 1995, but her time away from MSU was short-lived. She returned to Brody Square soon after, where she worked another decade before transitioning into a more student-facing role in South Neighborhood.

Recently, Kent celebrated her 92nd birthday with a surprise party thrown by her team members at Holden Dining.

When asked what has kept her at MSU, Kent says, “You couldn’t ask for a better place to be than at MSU. The students make everything worth it, and my coworkers have each other’s backs.”

She specifically appreciates that her manager, Kevin Oyler, is always respectful, kind and considerate.

Oyler, who has worked with Clara for eight years, shares his admiration for her special bond with students.

“When she’s cleaning the dining room, the students ask if they can talk to her about life and what’s going on with them. She has a good listening ear and offers motherly advice. She’s like everyone’s mom or grandmother,” he says. “The students also know they can always find a hug from Clara. She has such a spunky energy about her, even at 92 years old. She comes to work with a great attitude, loves being with the students and is outgoing. The staff at Holden absolutely love working with her.”

A coworker, Michelle Moench, who met Kent 16 years ago at Wilson Dining, wanted to recognize her years of dedication to MSU.

“Clara helps with anything — prep cutting, cleaning tables, whatever needs to be done. She has unmatched zest for life and is always there for her team.”

Moench, now the retail uniform supervisor at Spartan Linen Services, also notes Clara’s incredible work ethic.

“Clara would go and go without needing praise. She has been at MSU for over 50 years, and her impact on students is clear — they feel like they have a piece of home with her around. Clara has made a real difference. She’ll be missed when she decides to leave, and if I could bottle up her energy, I’d be rich,” Moench says.

As Clara Kent continues to inspire those around her at Michigan State University, the community expresses deep gratitude for her years of unwavering dedication. Her commitment to students and coworkers alike has left a positive mark on the university, reminding everyone that the heart of MSU truly lies in its people. On behalf of Culinary Services, thank you, Clara, for your incredible service and the joy you bring to those you encounter every day.
