Office of Spartan Experiences Director Announced

Tammye Coles was selected to serve as the new Director of the Office of Spartan Experiences (OSE) effective March 4, 2024.

Tammye previously served as the Associate Director for the Office of Spartan Experiences, where she worked with university partners to coordinate the University Fall Welcome signature activities. Tammye led an exceptional collaborative Fall Welcome experience for first-year and returning students for many years. Under her leadership, the overall engagement experience was enhanced and the attendance for signature Fall Welcome programs significantly increased, most notably Convocation and Spartan Spectacular, which have historically included programs such as the Fall Welcome Culinary experience, Sparticipation, Spartan Showcase, Spartan Spirit, and Spartan Movie Night.

Tammye was instrumental in creating the Spartan Spectacular event concept that facilitated a unique collaborative experience, most notable with Culinary Services and Athletics, across numerous university departments.

Tammye has also led the Student Excellence Awards, supporting programming for designated student cohorts. Tammye’s roles at Michigan State have afforded her the opportunity to engage in an “Extreme Makeover” build, serve on the Fall Welcome Re-Imagined Team, assist with the deployment of the 1989 Study-In Reunion, and Spartan Leadership Roundtables.

Before her appointment in OSE, Tammye served as a Student Affairs Coordinator in the Office of Racial Ethnic Students Affairs (ORESA) office, now known as the Office of Cultural & Academic Transitions (OCAT).

She also worked at Lansing Community College in various positions before leaving to be the Dean of Student Affairs at Midway College in Kentucky. At the time she was appointed as Dean of Student Affairs, she was both the youngest and only African American female in her home state of Kentucky in this position. Tammye has also worked for the state government, The Lansing Juvenile Detention Center, and The Lansing Urban League. She has an extensive background in counseling, with a wide array of specialized areas including a focus on trauma and crisis management.

Tammye is dedicated to her community and field and has supported her profession. She has worked to support her community through her church, her sorority, and other philanthropic and community service organizations within the Greater Lansing Area. She has received numerous awards, most notably, three State of Kentucky Colonel awards, the highest civic award granted to a Kentuckian.

Tammye is a 4th generation college graduate and holds a B.A. from Kentucky State University, where she served in the student government presidential cabinet in the capacity of Miss Kentucky State University and was featured in the national Ebony magazine publication. She is also a Spartan, having received an M.A. from Michigan State University.
