MSU Culinary Services Brings Local Coffee Company to Union Building

East Lansing, MICH — Michigan State University (MSU) Culinary Services is excited to announce that beginning fall 2023, Strange Matter Coffee, of Lansing, MI, will open a dedicated space in the MSU Union Building. This collaboration allows MSU Culinary Services to offer students, staff and faculty the opportunity to experience locally roasted coffee right on campus.

Strange Matter Coffee is a Lansing-based coffee roaster and café that has gained popularity in the region for its unique coffee and commitment to quality. It sources beans from around the world and roasts them in small batches to ensure freshness and consistency.

“We are thrilled to bring Strange Matter Coffee to the MSU Union,” said Rebecca Selesky, assistant vice president of Culinary Services. “Their coffee is not only delicious but also sustainably sourced, which aligns with our values of promoting environmental stewardship.”

The new offering to the MSU Union is expected to be well received by the MSU community. Strange Matter will occupy the space previously filled by Biggby.

“We are excited to be a part of the MSU community and look forward to sharing our passion for great coffee with the students, staff and faculty,” said Cara Nader, founder of Strange Matter Coffee “Our partnership with MSU Culinary Services will allow us to showcase our unique coffee and connect with the campus community.”

Strange Matter is also known for their bakery, which offers a selection of unique vegan items. Customers visiting their main locations can enjoy vegan doughnut flavors like Earl Grey, Hibiscus Limeade, and Cookie Bomb, or try a blueberry or savory herb scone. Strange Matter Coffee plans to have a standard selection of rotational vegan bakery items at the MSU Union location available daily.

Strange Matter first started as a coffee stand in Allen Street Farmers Market before opening their first storefront in 2014. Since then, they’ve expanded to two locations with over twenty employees.
