Breslin Student Events Center Becomes Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue

The Breslin Student Events Center has partnered with KultureCity, a nonprofit that focuses on sensory accessibility, to make the arena and all programs and events sensory inclusive. The initiative promotes an accommodating and positive experience for all guests and fans who visit the Breslin Center by creating a sensory accessible and inclusive environment.

Part of the certification process involved the training of Breslin Center staff by leading medical professionals on how to recognize guests and fans with sensory needs and how to assist in a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads will also be available to guests.

According to KultureCity, 1 in 6 individuals in the US has a sensory processing need, which can include sensitivity to sounds, lights and crowds. With its new certification, Breslin is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having a comfortable experience when attending an event.

“Becoming a certified sensory inclusive venue is a big milestone for the Breslin Center and the surrounding community,” said Breslin Student Events Center Manager Jeff Latinen. “We want Breslin to be an inclusive space for all our guests, and to be able to offer that experience now to anyone who wants to enjoy an event here is exciting.”

Individuals can download the free KultureCity app, which allows users to view available sensory features and how to access them prior to an event. Also available on the app is the Social Story, which provides a preview of what to expect when attending the Breslin Center.

“Our communities are what shapes our lives and to know that the Breslin Student Events Center is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, is included in their community is amazing. We’re honored to partner with Breslin Student Events Center to provide a truly inclusive experience for all fans and guests!” said Uma Srivastava, Executive Director, KultureCity.
