Michigan State University Greek Week 2024 Carries On Annual Success in Community Engagement and Philanthropy

Final tallies show contributions including $30K and over 600 Books to charities

Michigan State University’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life concluded its annual Greek Week this past spring with excellent achievements in community service and philanthropy. Overall, Greek Week raised over $30,000 for the Greater Lansing Food Bank and the Ingham County Animal Shelter. Students organized a Crowd Change Campaign and various food fundraisers to support these vital community organizations.

“Greek Week is both a fun and important tradition here at MSU. These student organizations do so much throughout the year—they get really busy. So, Greek Week allows an opportunity for all the organizations to celebrate the closing of another year by uniting for good causes,” said ShirDonna Lawrence, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Every spring, the student organizations unite to form Greek Week teams. The teams choose organizations to sponsor and compete in a series of events aimed at building camaraderie and making a positive impact in the local community, such as fundraising, Greek Day of Service, Greek Games, and more.

The week kicked off with a successful Blood Drive on April 3 at the Breslin Center concourse, where 156 donors contributed 129 pints of blood, potentially saving up to 387 lives. Days later on April 5 for the official Day of Service, 2,105 students volunteered across East Lansing. Many students gathered at the International Center to craft dog and cat toys from recycled t-shirts, benefiting local animal shelters. Others lent their time to the Allen Neighborhood Garden House to nurture urban green spaces and foster community growth through sustainable gardening initiatives.

Hosting a dual-day donation drive on April 4 and 11, students generously donated 620 books to the Reading People and 67 electronic/board games to the Boys and Girls Club, enriching local educational and recreational resources for youth.

The energy was high on April 10 for the electrifying Greek Week Spotlight show, where the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council (PC) teams dazzled the audience in a spirited dance competition themed "The Spartys," a play on The Oscars. Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, and Sigma Alpha Mu claimed the first-place crown.

The culminating Trivia & Awards ceremony on April 12 celebrated Sigma Kappa as the Overall Trivia Winner and recognized Alpha Xi Delta as the Top Fundraising Chapter. Greek Week champions were also announced, with Phi Kappa Psi (IFC), Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc., and Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. (Multicultural Greek Council—MGC), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (National Pan-Hellenic Council—NPHC), and Alpha Xi Delta (PC) claiming first place honors.
