MSU Safe Ride Program Receives Chrysler Donation

The Associated Students of Michigan State University’s (ASMSU) Safe Ride program received the donation of a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica all-wheel drive minivan from Stellantis.

The Safe Ride program provides free, on-campus transportation from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., seven days a week, as a safe and accessible alternative for students traveling alone late at night. As ASMSU Vice President of Financial Operations Drew Gardner noted, this donation will help the association focus on expanding this popular student program.

“Continuing to make campus feel safe for all students is a large priority of ASMSU, and it is exciting to envision how our program could develop with the additional van in our fleet,” Gardner added.

The Pacifica minivan is valued at $58,302, and the donation also includes two Calm Cabin packages. Introduced earlier in 2023, the Calm Cabin package helps people with autism feel calm, safe and comfortable. Incorporating these items in the minivan aligns with the Division of Student Life & Engagement’s (SLE) and MSU’s commitment to support a diverse population, including neurodiverse students.

“The new Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle minivan will tremendously alter what Safe Ride can offer MSU students as it will reduce wait times and increase inclusive opportunities with the Calm Cabin interior,” said Assistant Vice President for Student Development and Leadership Allyn Shaw, Ph.D. “This is a great opportunity for MSU Safe Ride to enhance the student experience and be successful.”

A ceremony and reception took place Aug. 30 at People’s Park on MSU’s campus. Remarks were given by Interim President for MSU Teresa K. Woodruff, Senior Vice President for Student Life & Engagement Vennie Gore, Dr. Shaw, Gardner, and MSU alumna and CEO of the Chrysler brand for Stellantis Christine Feuell.

“This gift ensures the MSU Safe Ride has the tools necessary to remain a vital service, directly impacting the needs of our students,” said Associate Director of Development for SLE Danielle Matlick. “We are grateful to Chris Feuell and the Stellantis team for providing an accessible and inclusive option for our Safe Ride program.”
