MSU Student Veteran Resource Center Renaming to Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students

Michigan State University’s Student Veteran Resource Center is entering a new chapter, rebranding as the Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students (CVMAS) to better reflect its growing mission of support for service members, veterans and military-connected students.

The name change, effective this month, comes with a renewed commitment to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for military-affiliated Spartans, not just veterans. CVMAS remains dedicated to recognizing and honoring students’ military backgrounds while guiding them through their academic journeys.

“Michigan State is home to more than 2,500 military-affiliated students, and that number continues to grow,” said Patrick Forystek, CVMAS director. “This evolution ensures that every veteran and military-affiliated student on our campus knows they belong, are supported and have the resources they need to succeed, whether they’re a veteran, wearing the uniform or part of a military family.”

This transition also aligns with the Month of the Military Child, which celebrates the contributions and sacrifices of military families. In recognition of the month, the center is planning several events for students, including a tie-dyeing event on Wednesday, April 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Services Building. Additionally, CVMAS is working to secure group tickets for a performance of Decision Height at Wharton Center, with details to be announced soon.

Under Forystek’s leadership, CVMAS has strengthened partnerships with national military-affiliated organizations, securing the Warrior-Scholar Project’s return to MSU in 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the center was named one of 10 finalists for the 2024 Operation Hat Trick Excellence in Service Award, earning a $20,000 donation in recognition of its commitment to military students.
